Nokia Siemens Networks has announced completion of a capacity upgrade to the TasGovNet optical fibre backbone network, provided by Government-owned power utility, Aurora Energy.
The network connects the cities of Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport and, according to Nokia Siemens and Aurora, "represents a launch platform for Tasmania's communications revolution." However they have not said what role, if any, it will play in the Tasmanian NBN.
Aurora's telecommunications strategic advisor, Gary Eiszele, said the demand for broadband in Tasmania was growing rapidly and the upgrade would enable Aurora Energy to satisfy the new connectivity needs of operators, enterprises, and government in Tasmania.
Nokia Siemens Networks has deployed its hiT 7300 DWDM platform, and provided related equipment and support services, network implementation and training for Aurora's staff.
The deployment is the fifth in Australia for the hiT 7300 that, according to Nokia Siemens,
"reduces network complexity and simplifies network maintenance and management, resulting in lower capital and operating expenses."
