PeerApp, McAfee partner for broadband filtering

Business IT - Networking

PeerApp and McAfee have partnered to offer content classification at the speed required by fixed and mobile network operators.

The combination of PeerApp's UltraBand 5000 media cache with McAfee's SmartFilter is claimed to categorise and control content delivery at multi-Gbps rates.

The UltraBand allows policy-based control according to specific URLs or the output of McAfee's classification engine, which puts more than 25 million sites into 90 categories and also detects malware and other security threats.

"PeerApp is the first and only supplier to deliver carrier-grade content control at multi-Gbps scale," said PeerApp CEO Robert Mayer.

"Policies can be configured to meet specific network operator preferences or to meet local regulatory requirements. By embedding McAfee SmartFilter technology, we are enabling our service provider customers to better serve their subscribers, reduce Web security risks, and comply with local laws," he added.

Thomas Moore, vice president of worldwide OEM sales for McAfee, said "By combining the McAfee SmartFilter technology with PeerApp intelligent media caching, service providers stand to benefit strongly from a single solution that can reduce overall operating costs and provide subscribers with a vastly improved Internet experience."

PeerApp officials claim the UltraBand 5000 is the only multi-service, multi-protocol caching solution for video and download services that intelligently optimises multimedia-content delivery to serve consumers without overtaxing network bandwidth or infrastructure.
