OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
Mitel has announced the Mitel Virtual Mitel Communications Director (Virtual MCD), claiming it to be the first real-time voice application designed for the VMware vSphere 4 virtualisation platform.
Virtual MCD is a software package download that runs on vSphere 4, enabling customers to access and install Mitel's call control software.
According to Mitel, "This results in the potential for: capital savings due to the significant reduction in server hardware and real estate; operational savings with the reduction in power and server provisioning costs as well as productivity improvements and resource efficiencies in data centre management and risk mitigation for business continuity and disaster recovery plans."
Mitel and VMware claim to already have a number of joint customers in the US and the UK that have deployed Virtual MCD, saying: "These customer sites consist of users ranging from 30 to more than 2,000."
vSphere, announced last April, is a virtual operating system designed to amalgamate multiple servers, network and storage devices in multiple locations into a single entity that can be used to support multiple applications with the allocation of resources between applications being fully flexible in real time.
Mitel was an early partner with VMware on vSphere, announcing in June plans to port the Mitel Communications Director and voice applications onto vSphere.
Virtual MCD is the latest application in the Mitel Virtual Solutions software portfolio. According to the company "The next phase will include Mitel Applications Suite (MAS) and Mitel Border Gateway (MBG) as virtual appliances built using VMware Studio to be released 60 days after Virtual MCD.
"In addition to MCD, Mitel Unified Communicator Advanced, Mitel Contact Centre Solutions and Mitel Enterprise Manager are VMware Ready applications," Mitel said.
The VMware Ready Program is a VMware co-branding program for qualified partner products. VMware Ready products have passed an evaluation and testing process and are ready for deployment in production environments.
