The NBN Co will soon name locations around Australia for the initial roll-out of National Broadband Network infrastructure as 'first-release' live trial sites, executive chairman Mike Quigley has told a Senate committee.
Work on the so-called "first-release" sites will start early in the second half of the year, following the commissioning of the company's Network Operations Centre in Melbourne, and its NBN Integration Lab, also to be based in Melbourne.
Appearing before an estimates hearing in Canberra today, Quigley told Senators the NBN Co had recently appointed a chief information officer, a head of construction and a lead procurement executive.
The $43 billion start-up still employs just 112 people, currently based in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. But Quigley says he anticipates a headcount of 300 by June, as the company's technical operations start in earnest.
"We will soon be announcing the establishment of facilities to house our Network Operations, Integration Labs and Data Centre," Quigley said. About 250 people would be employed at the facilities.
The "first-release" sites would be used to validate network design and to qualify its end to end systems – following the company's testing in its integration labs.
