Telecom NZ's NGN network nears rollout

Business IT - Networking

Telecom New Zealand says it has completed its first next generation voice trial, hailing it as the first step in rolling out its $NZ1.4 billion next generation network (NGN).

The trial involved 120 residential customers, small businesses and Telecom staff using a voice over IP service for three months. "The trial has given us some great insight into what our customers want," said Telecom head of consumer marketing, Victoria Crone. "They are looking for more call management features that allow them to communicate when and where they want, and on their terms."

Telecom NZ says the next step in developing NGN services is a fibre to the home trial that will begin in May to 430 homes. It plans to start introducing to the market next generation services that cover communications, information and entertainment late this year.
