Tasmanian power company, Aurora Energy has extended its trial of broadband communication over powerlines, currently being rolled out in Hobart, to Burnie. Tasmanian energy minister, Bryan Green, said the project had been made possible "because of the innovative decision by the Burnie City Council, to install optical fibre in the city". The Burnie areas selected for the trial are Singline Estate, and the Malonga Drive to Taroona Avenue area, with connecting streets between TAFE and Shorewell. The trials are being carried out in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric, and supported by Aurora's telecommunications subsidiary TasTel. If the commercial trial succeeds the technology will be rolled out 250,00 Aurora customers.
