3G for the Bush is OK by Coonan

Communications minister senator Helen Coonan has responded to a report in the Australian suggesting that Telstra is contemplating shutting down its CDMA network and replacing it with 3G.

She said that her Government "would welcome any commitment by Telstra, or any other telecommunications carrier, to rollout next generation mobile phone networks to the bush."

However she added a caveat (rather inappropriate in the context of mobile communications0 "provided customers were not left dangling on the end of the line."

"Anything that Telstra can do to improve the delivery of new and existing services will benefit customers. I look forward to hearing more following the completion of Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo's strategic assessment of the company," Coonan said.
