SPT to provide broadband for NSW Govt

Business IT - Networking

SP Telemedia has been appointed to a panel of service providers selected by the NSW Government to provide local access to its core broadband network, which is being built by SPT.

In January 2005 SPT secured the exclusive contract to build and operate the NSW Whole of Government Broadband Core Network: a state-wide IP/MPLS network with 26 network access points that will provide a near complete coverage of the state.

Under the local access component of the State Broadband project, SPT will provide customer access tails for agencies across NSW using technologies other than Telstra's local loop.

The company is also eyeing a slice of the Connect Australia funding allocated by the Government in order to secure National Party support for the full sale of Telstra. CEO, Michael Simmons, said: "SPT has in the last four years and will continue to invest in telecommunications infrastructure and conduct its business in the regional and rural communities of Australia as well as capital cities. We see significant opportunities and great rewards for both shareholders & the regional communities from this business focus and investment."
