OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
Telnic, the company behind the .tel top level domain launching in December and billed as "a new communications 'hub' for individuals and businesses that...will enable secure sharing of contact information and true personalisation of online services" is releasing beta versions of applications for BlackBerries, iPhones and Window -based PCs that will enable address books to be dynamically updated with information stored in a .tel owner's domain.
In May 2006, six years after lodging its initial application, UK based Telnic finally gained ICANN approval for the new top level domain, .tel, which it proposes to use as a one-stop shop where individuals and organisations will be able to provide a range of contact information.
According to Telnic, "by leveraging innovative DNS (domain name system) technology, the .tel domain will allow anyone to publish and control, in real time, how they can be reached. The .tel domain will enable people to reach a business from any Internet enabled device (computer or mobile) simply by typing, for example, 'Hertz.tel'. The user will then be able to connect directly to a Hertz representative or navigate through a list of services that Hertz may offer."
The company announced in June that services on /tel would launch in December 2008.
The applications are free to download and are part of a range of resources and open source code for developers, that, according to Telnic, will enable developers to create new applications and services for the .tel platform that can be used as models for new types of applications around communications, directory services, location-based services, search and social networking, designed to exploit the DNS-based .tel service.
"Now is the right time to get the ball rolling to energise the developer community and deliver something long anticipated - a platform that an individual has complete control over that will change the way they can manage information and services online," claimed Henri Asseily, chief strategist and CTO at Telnic.
".tel owners will now be able to experience total control over the services they subscribe to, having an online identity under their own domain name which they own, and which acts as a hub where all kinds of services and people can interact with them, securely and efficiently.
He claimed that, "With the new services that developers can deliver for customers, the bad old days of manually updating contact information and the outdated and fragmented information available within yellow page directories online will finally be a thing of the past."
Telnic is also exploring a competition for developers that will see a prize fund for services and applications developed which take advantage of the .tel service.
