Thank goodness that not all paedophiles are clever, cunning and stealthy. Some are just plain and simple morons, which makes catching them all that much easier. Take the case of Mark Bowness, caught viewing child porn images at his local public library, for example...
The
level of child pornography online will vary according to whom
provides the statistics and what agenda they have. However, the fact
that it is a growing problem cannot be overlooked. The UK-based
Internet Watch Foundation released key trends
when it reached a 10 year investigation milestone.
These included a rise from 615 processed reports
in its first year to 27,750 in its tenth; 92 percent of these related
to web-based content; 85 percent related to potential child abuse
websites; 51 percent were hosted in the US; 62 percent were removed
within a month.
The fact that child pornography is relatively easy to find, courtesy of
the Internet, compared to say 20 years ago has spurred the growth in
online paedophile behaviour. The perception that the Internet provides
anonymity to those would look at this filth drives otherwise 'closet
paedos' out onto the Web.
Unfortunately, one has to assume that the majority of paedophiles are
secretive and stealthy in their habits. After all, it is not something
you would boast about down the pub over a pint unless you had a death
wish.
The use of encryption and anonymous proxies and disposable webmail accounts is rife, one would imagine.
Thank goodness, I say, for the child abusing morons who are not tech
savvy, or are just so deluded to think they are above the law. Thank
goodness for the likes of Mark Bowness then.
Unlike New York, Wales has yet to
wipe child porn off the Internet. A local Welsh newspaper has
reported how the 38 year old pervert
is behind bars for 30 months after being caught viewing child porn
images in a city public library.
Bowness claimed that "people did not understand his sexual preferences"
and "regarded him as being sick and a pervert." Well he is not wrong
there.
Meanwhile, another sick pervert was sentenced to 39 weeks in jail, and
an 18 month probation service order, after being caught looking at
child porn online at work.
Another local newspaper
reports
how 44 year old Michael Hanlon "ogled an image of a naked six-year-old
girl" in front of horrified colleagues at the Legal and General
insurance offices wheer he worked in Hove, England.
Hanlon was sacked and police alerted, which led to his home being searched and DVDs of child porn being discovered.
Ironically, Hanlon was working as part of the 'key networks protection' team at the insurance firm at the time.
