NBN Co will use desktop virtualisation technology from Citrix to deliver IT to the NBN rollout.

NBN Co has contracted Citrix to supply, install and support desktop virtualisation software. While the initial deployment is aimed at supporting the network rollout, it appears that the broadband network builder intends to use it more widely over time.

"We were impressed with Citrix's ability to integrate into our existing datacentre and desktop systems, as speed to market is an important factor for a young organisation," said Robert Davies, end user technology architect at NBN Co.

"We have chosen the combination of Citrix XenApp and Citrix XenDesktop to give us the flexibility to support all our application provisioning use cases for both internal users and third party users." he added.

While desktop virtualisation provides a convenient and centralised way of managing standard desktop environments within an organisation, it also makes it easy to deliver short-term access to particular applications for contractors.

Peter Brockhoff, Citrix area vice president for Australia and New Zealand, said Citrix was "thrilled to be able to be a key partner to such an exciting and nationally significant project. The NBN is set to transform every aspect of our lives, including business, government, health and education services. Citrix is proud to be working alongside NBN Co to deliver that vision."
